Ph.D in physics - Works in the Advanced Materials and Complex Systems Group at the Department of Physics at the University of Oslo in Norway. In addition to his core univerity studies (focusing on multiphase flow in porous media), Dr. Løvoll also researches fly-casting via high-speed video imaging and computer analysis.

The rotation of the rod is reponsible for the majority of the rod tip's distance. We measure the rotation at the cast sector and the action the caster performs on the rod at the itegral of the moment of the force over the cast sector.

If this is increased by 10%, one will be able to reduce the moment of the force correspondingly. It is the moment of the force that puts stress on the body and that can cause wear and tear injuries.

The Zpey handle increases the casting sector by approx. 10 degrees, thus providing an approx. 10% longer "working angle" for the moment of the force on the rod. Simply, put, a person uses approx. 10% less power with the Zpey handle. The Zpey handle permits wide casting sectors with a technique where the upper hand can be held against the body, without turning the upper body. This reduces the moment of the force (and the strain) on the right shoulder and arm. Such a casting technique will also limit the statstical strains that involve holding the rod further away from the body and therefore, further limit the risk of chronic musculoskeletal injuries.. The Zpey handle also makes it possible to redistribute the work between the arms (for example from 50/50 upper/lower to 40/60 upper/lower). The handle allows the majority of the work to be performed by pulling the lower arm, without limiting the casting sector or turning the upper body.
