Difference in balance. A short transition phenomena.
By Mathias Lilleheim

Many people who try out the Zpey rod for their first time experience another type of balance than they are used to with straight rods. We have heard expression like “not in balance”, “rotation”, after just a couple of cast with the rod. Especially, due to the back stroke in Spey casting.

But after some minutes and more cast they no longer experience what they called “unbalance”, but more like a different balance that they get used to. Some people only need 5 minutes to experience this, but other may need an hour or two on water. The accustoming is a little bit about grip, and small adjustment of the rods movement.

“It is just like buying a new different car, and get used to the handle of it”

The difference in balance is only felt of course to those people who are used to straight rods. Beginners take it just like anything else, and for those who have had the choice of the two rods and are beginners, they say that the Zpey rod are more intuitive. They activate the lower hand more easily and do not have to worry too much about the timing between the two hands.  A test has been done by Aaron Reimer in US on beginners.

To those people who are used to cast in the slope plan and go from there to a vertical plan in the same cast will maybe feel a strange balance, but to change plan in the front stroke is actually a casting fault. The Zpey handle will therefore be of great help for those who struggle with this, you get instant feedback from the rod. The handle will help you to keep straight lines thru the cast, and keep the line tip in straight position thru the whole front stroke.

This difference in balance is then just a transition phenomenon and will actually help you to increase your casting ability, and it is great fun as well.

Now you know about the difference in balance before you start you’re training with the Zpey rod, just be a little bit patient with your new rod and you will be a better fisherman and caster. Good luck to you, and thank you for your time.

     “Get used to it”.
