The best Long Belly line in the world?
When it comes to single hand fly fishing with Weight Forward (WF) lines between # 3 and # 6, normally used for trout or grayling here in Norway (but surely for other species as well in other countries), fly casting skills and topography should matter when you choose fly lines:
Last year (2009) Zpey gave you two of the very best short bellied WF-lines ever made
“ZPEY PRECISION” and “ZPEY ULTIMO”
This year we give you the Long Belly line
“Zpey Silence”
After testing three different prototypes based on the “hunch” that a stepwise front taper (level steps with triangular cones in between) would turn over leaders more effectively, we hit jackpot in September 2009. We were already very close with the second batch of prototypes and three of us (Tor Grøthe, Jarle Strandberg and I) had fished with this slightly unfinished version through the summer, mostly in the fantastic trout river “Hemsila”, and we were all amazed with how wonderfully the line performed. We could hold more line in the air, manage hair raising distance presentations and gain those extra meters more easily than even we had hoped (with a line designed for fishing, not casting), but maybe the most impressive characteristic about this line was how the level steps in the front taper made even frightfully long leaders turn over. In Hemsila we often use leaders of more than 2 ½ times the length of the rod to be able to present small dry flies to big and difficult trout. “Zpey Silence” handled this beautifully, even with only parts of the head outside the top guide.
You could actually see the steps in the front taper if you watched the loop turn over.
All of this was praise for the old version and the finished version is even better!
Both of the WF lines Zpey presented last year (and which will be equally popular this year) – “Zpey Precision” and “Zpey Ultimo” – had two characteristics never before seen in fly lines:
This Light Blue coloured “Silence” line is made with the same slick coating and the same Line Reference System and the colour of the marks of the Line Reference System is a very dark blue. Additionally, we will equip the “Silence” lines with single dark blue marks referring to 15 meters, 20 meters, 25 meters and 30 meters, to make it easier to know how much line you are holding in the air and how much line you are shooting.
“Zpey Silence” will be available in a shop near you in the beginning of April. Here are the details:

- Extremely slick coating: Specially made coating for a minimum of friction
When it comes to single hand fly fishing with Weight Forward (WF) lines between # 3 and # 6, normally used for trout or grayling here in Norway (but surely for other species as well in other countries), fly casting skills and topography should matter when you choose fly lines:
- Beginners (and fly fishers struggling with their fly casting) should always start their fly fishing careers with short bellied WF lines. Too long bellies are hard to control and will often result in fly casting techniques based on compensation (too much force).
- If you only fish small rivers or waters where vegetation prevents you from having too much line outside the tip of the rod, you should also choose a line with a short belly (or head), no matter your casting skills.
- BUT, if you have climbed the first few steps of the fly casting ladder with normal success and feel comfortable with a slightly longer line, “Zpey Silence” is definitely the line for you.

Both of the WF lines Zpey presented last year (and which will be equally popular this year) – “Zpey Precision” and “Zpey Ultimo” – had two characteristics never before seen in fly lines:
- Super slick coating: The coating is melted into the core of the line in a special process that ensures fantastic slickness and lack of friction. This coating will reduce your use of fly line dressing to a minimum.
- Line Reference System: The loading zone (where the running line starts) of this line is made visual through a number of marks corresponding to the weight class (a # 3 line will have 3 marks and a # 5 line will have 5 marks). In this way you will never have to wonder what weight a specific line is.
