Fantastic NEW Competition fly lines from Zpey System

02.02.2010

The test period is over and the new fantastic Competition fly lines from Zpey System are  under production.
This project has been going on for more than a year and the objective was simply to make the best competition fly lines ever.
Our Product Developing Manager, Henrik Mortensen, put me in charge of everything and I immediately called my friend and Zpey Team colleague, Knut Ekelund. Knut might be one of the greatest fly line nerds on this planet (and utterly positive description, of course) and with additional help from another nerdy friend, Geir Hansen, the three of us got to work.

We needed several prototypes and, as already mentioned, almost a year before we were satisfied, but the lines we have now are definitely worth all the long hours and the occasional disappointments along the way.
Tommy Aarkvisla won the CLA 18 foot Spey Casting Competition in July 2009 with one of these prototypes; a 90 foot version that was getting close to our standards, but still wasn't good enough. I won the Norwegian Championship 18 foot competition with the first edition of our 100 foot line, Tommy and I won lots of medals at the big Fly Casting Championship in Japan in October and all the time the lines were getting closer to perfection. We received the last prototypes in the beginning of December and after a just few casts we knew we'd hit jackpot.

IMPORTANT: Having been careful with the first order of lines from the factory (Rio) and noticing the massive interest from Competition Casters all over the world, it might be a wise move to order your lines in advance. Send a mail to post@zpey.no or mathias.lilleheim@olympiatoppen.no if you want to order, or if you need further information.

The following Competition lines are under production and will be available on the market at the end of March (all of them will be coloured fluorescent red):

1. 100' (83 grams) to 90' spey casting double hand line
This line will, of course, be delivered as a 100' and 83 gram line, but, following guidelines that will be posted on this web site, you can cut the line to anything between 100' and 90'. This line is designed for Spey Casting with an 18' rod and has a long and triangular front taper, a short belly and a short rear taper. This profile, combined with a relatively soft coating will result in a line with enormous amounts of energy and an equally amazing capability of turning over even long leaders.

2. 82' (69 grams) to 75' spey casting/overhead casting double hand line
This fantastic line is 82' and 69 grams as delivered, but can be cut to anything between 82' and 75' based on guidelines found on this web site. The uncut version will be a wonderful Overhead Casting line for an 18' rod, but also a perfect line for Spey Casting from a platform with a 16' rod. A slightly shorter version, depending on rod actions and casting styles, will be fantastic for both 16' and 15' Spey Casting standing in the water. This line has a longer rear taper than the 100' line, to ensure better overhead performances, but if you cut this rear taper about 2 feet, it will work better as a Spey Casting line. This line has the same long front taper and short belly as the 100' line. Noting the massive interest at this early stage, we advise you not to wait too long if you think this is a line for you.

3. 75' (60 grams) spey casting/overhead casting double hand line
This 75' and 60 gram line is specially designed for the Norwegian National Championships 16' competition, where you combine Overhead Casting and Spey Casting. It will also be perfect for the coming World Championship in Fly Casting that will be arranged in Norway (Fagernes) in August 2010. One of the events will be a Double Hand Overhead competition for 15 foot rods and the proposed maximum line weight is 60 grams. With a slightly longer belly and shorter rear taper, this line is slightly different from the two other double handed lines, but these differences will be thoroughly described on this web site prior to release.

4. 60' (27 gram) overhead casting /spey casting single hand line
A fantastic single hand competition line that will be perfect for the upcoming World Championship in Fly Casting (Norway - August 2010), the CLA Saltwater competition, the single hand 10' # 8 competition in Japan, the Norwegian National Championship and probably many other competitions as well. This line has a longer belly than the double hand lines and a very short rear taper, because it will almost exclusively be used for Overhead Casting (with the exception of the Norwegian National Championship). Competition casters in Norway are already lining up for this line. Without doubt, the best line on the market for single hand Competition casting with rods between # 7 and # 9.
