NEW! A whole range of Competition Fly Casting Rods from Zpey
The actions of the different Zpey fly rods have always intrigued fly fishers all over the world. Deep, powerful, smooth
and with relatively tough tips and short stroke lengths. Actions made for fly fishing, but also performing in different
kinds of competitive fly casting; to a certain level, that is. Performing to a certain level was not good enough for
Zpey, of course, so we decided to design a full range of Competition Fly Rods and to present them to the market in 2010.
You will find a piece about Competition Fly Lines right beside this one and we have named the whole range of
rods and lines Zpey Competition Line. Four different lines are under production and will be ready for the
market at the end of March: A 100' line of 83 grams, an 82' line of 69 grams, a 75' line of 60 grams and a 60'
single hand line of 27 grams. A fifth line will be ready a couple of months later: A WF Long Belly line for
single hand competitions with 9 foot # 5 rods.
NOTE: Already fly fishers have ordered 15 or 16 foot competition rods to use them for salmon fishing with heavy
sinking shooting heads and we know that many more will follow. Even though these rods are powerful, they are
still deep and sensitive and made to cast fishing lines. Long fishing lines, yes, but still fishing lines.
The colours of these competition rods will rock the fly casting world. They are silvery white, with fluorescent
green details and they look fantastic.
The actions of the spey casting rods (double handed rods) are based on our fly fishing rods, but stronger. They
will be very deep and smooth, but with short stroke lengths and very powerful tip sections. The carbon used in
these rods will be the most powerful carbon on the market.
The actions of the single hand overhead casting rods will not be as deep as for the spey rods and the tip sections
will also be less tough, but the same smoothness and power will also radiate from these rods, but in a different
way.
The prototypes are amazingly powerful and the best is yet to come. The interest in these rods are already huge
in Norway. The rest of the world will, we believe, follow.
The Competition Line fly rods will be available on the market in just a few weeks. If you are interested in one
or more of these rods, it's possible to reserve in advance by sending a mail to one or both of the following
addresses: post@zpey.no or mathias.lilleheim@olympiatoppen.no
18 foot Competition Line double handed fly rod
The big brother of the Competition Line family and a friendly monster. Monster because of it's length and inherent
power, but friendly because of the depth and smoothness of it's action. For spey casting with long lines and for
overhead casting with slightly shorter and lighter lines. A future competition winning specimen!
For spey casting with this rod, you should use the Zpey Competition Line 100', 83 gram fly line and either keep it
as it is or cut it to your own specification based on the cutting advice that will be posted on this web site in March.
For overhead casting you could also use the Zpey Competition Line 82', 69 grams fly line. Both alternatives will work
beautifully.
16 foot Competition Line double handed fly rod
For spey casting with relatively long lines from platforms, for spey casting from standing in water and for overhead
casting. The same basic action as for the 18 foot rod: Deep, smooth, tough tipped, powerful and with a relatively
short stroke length. For spey casting we will definitely recommend the Zpey Competition Line 82', 69 gram fly line;
either full length or cut to a shorter length based on the advice that will be posted on this web site in March. You
could also use the Zpey Competition Line 75', 60 gram fly line for both spey and overhead casting.
15 foot Competition Line double handed fly rod
The action of the "little brother" 15 foot rod is based on the same action as for the two bigger brothers. The same
depth, the same stroke length and smoothness of action and the same toug tip section. This rod is a wonderful
choice for spey casting competitions where you are standing in the water. For competitions like these, you would
either choose a Zpey Competition Line 82', 69 gram fly line cut to a length and weight you prefer, based on
advice that will be posted on our web site in March, or the Zpey Competition Line 75', 60 gram fly line. For
overhead casting with this rod we will recommend the same two lines.
10 foot # 8 Competition Line single handed fly rod
This very powerful single hand competition rod has a shorter stroke length than the double handed spey rods and
is not as deep. You will still be able to engage the deep parts of the rod when you really need to. A perfect rod
for the Zpey Competition Line 60', 27 gram fly line, but it is strong enough to handle even slightly heavier lines.
Raw power!
10 foot # 7 Competition Line single handed fly rod
A slightly deeper and softer rod than it's # 8 bigger brother, but there will still be vast amounts of power left to
handle long lines and amazing distances. Also made for the Zpey Competition Line 60', 27 gram fly line, but will
also be able to handle lighter lines without problems. Smoothness and power in one and the same rod.
9 foot # 5 Competition Line single handed fly rod
As this rod is made for long bellied full length WF lines, it's deeper than the two 10 foot rods, but still with all
the power you will need to cast a line like this a long way. We are in the process of designing a competition fly line
just for this rod and this line will be ready in May. This rod has already been tested by many Norwegian
competition casters in an indoor hall and they are all just waiting for the finished product in March.
